Worldwide, access to food and clean drinking water is still a big problem because it is needed for nourishment. According to the world economic forum one in three people suffer from malnutrition. Furthermore, clean drinking water is needed for sanitation. If clothes or the body are cleaned with contaminated water, this may result in the rise of diseases. Comparable is the case for cooking and cleaning. Finally, clean water is the key ingredient in regards to food production. Nijhuis Industries in cooperation with SEMiLLA Sanitation has developed a concept (based on ESA Space technology), which in its complete model provides clean drinking water, irrigation water and compost. Circular-E implements the model on site, taking into account the local needs, creating a self-sustaining system without waste also known as the ‘closed loop' concept. In its complete model the concept consists of a drinking water unit (DWU), a sanitation units (SU) and a black water treatment unit (BWTU). The DWU treats influent (contaminated) surface- or groundwater turning it into drinking water that is used for the SUs. The SU may be placed upon multiple locations. Furthermore, the lay-out of the SU is flexible which consists of a lavatory, shower, water tap point or urinal. The setup and locations of the SU depends upon the local need, availability of funds and surrounding conditions. The SUs generate waste material, also known as black water, which is treated by the BWTU that has irrigation water and compost as effluent. The DWU and BWTU need energy to accomplish water treatment, the components needed to generate energy will be adjusted according to the availability of funds and surrounding conditions. The options to generate energy are solar panels, diesel generators, wind, biogas and batteries which can also be provided in hybrid units. Nevertheless, we will always aim to provide the most sustainable option.
