The Public Works Department for the City of Independence provides professional services for the Citizens of Independence as well as City departments. These services are delivered through the divisions of Engineering, Street Maintenance, Fleet Management and Facility Management. Typical functions of the Department include project management of public infrastructure projects, right-of-way acquisition, contract administration and development review. Public Works also issues various permits such as right-of-way, construction, blasting, erosion control and flood plain management. Record management of City-owned property, review and of citizen requests, construction inspection of private development, building maintenance and custodial services for most City-owned buildings, as well as manage right-of-way and erosion control of building sites are also services provided by the Department. The Street Maintenance Division maintains approximately 575 miles of streets through patching, surfacing, snow removal, signs, bridge repair and roadside maintenance as well as operates a very popular Drop-off Depot program. Public Works also manages the City's fleet with a centralized Fleet Management Division by maintaining and repairing more than 600 vehicles and pieces of equipment from various City Departments.
