Farming - Oakland, CA, United States
City Slicker Farms is a food justice organization that partners with diverse communities throughout the East Bay to create a more equitable food system. Our mission is to increase wellness and build community through equitable access to healthy food, thriving gardens, and urban green space.Through Backyard Gardens, we have built over 500 planter boxes and helped hundreds of members grow their own food. Participants receive two years of direct mentorship from our seasoned farmers and a lifetime supply of free soil, seeds, and plant starts. Our West Oakland Farm Park is a working educational farm with a greenhouse, chickens, bees, and a community garden. It also includes a kitchen, playground, and beautiful outdoor spaces. The Farm Park hosts community events and is a rich environment for connecting with neighbors and learning about food sovereignty and justice.Schools and community groups can visit the Farm Park as part of our Food and Farm Skill Share. We also offer gardening internships and host cooking classes, workshops, and potlucks that share the community's vibrant culinary traditions. At the Farm Park, we grow thousands of pounds of food each year for the community as part of our Farm To Fridge Produce Share. In partnership with the Town Fridge collective, we stock a fridge with veggies we've grown on the farm. The produce is free for all, but but we grow it with our low and fixed income, BIPOC, and unhoused community members in mind.
