Public Policy - Brussels, Brussels, Belgium
The CIVITAS Initiative ("City-Vitality-Sustainability", or "Cleaner and Better Transport in Cities") is a EU programme designed to support European cities in introducing ambitious, sustainable transport measures and policies.Since its first edition in 2002 CIVITAS Initiative has supported more than 60 cities in implementing and evaluating 730 technical and policy-based measures, and has globally mobilized resources for investments totalling approximately € 370 million.CIVITAS Initiative's added value does not only consist in financially supporting cities for testing new technologies and ideas for sustainable urban mobility: CIVITAS Initiative provides cities with a framework where the impacts produced by the implemented measures can be evaluated and the effectiveness of the implementation procedures can be assessed.Over the years CIVITAS Initiative has evolved into a broad, open and continuously growing community and today can rely on the permanent participation of around 200 cities that are involved in the different networks (CIVITAS Forum Network, the National Networks called CIVINET and the Thematic Groups) and that have signed the CIVITAS Declaration. Membership to the CIVITAS Forum allows cities to participate in the annual CIVITAS Forum Conference and engage in mutual dialogue, as well as with the European institutions. This is a major chance to take stock and further expand the consolidated know-how and lessons learned developed so far by the CIVITAS community.
