Clean Hands Initiative develops viable solutions for safe and sustainable livelihoods. Our vision is to improve the street market experience for both customers and the vendors, by providing accessible public handwash facilities. India's street vendors and market workers play a crucial role in feeding the nation. It is because of them that we are able to keep our supply chains running. Yet they are the ones who are the most neglected and at risk. Often lacking fixed contracts, regular salaries and social safety nets, these workers are forced to return to work even during the pandemic if they want to earn a living. One of the biggest challenges faced by such workers is the lack of basic amenities, such as handwash facilities, at their place of work. They often have to beg or walk long distances to fetch water. The lack of handwash facilities becomes even more problematic during the pandemic. Without proper provisions, the lives and livelihoods of these workers are at risk.We are a non-profit social venture led by young changemakeworks from New Delhi NCR, India. We partner with local communities and partners to install foot pedal-operated handwash stations in wholesale markets, mandis and street vending zones. Our model involves an easily refillable water tank mounted on a specially designed stand with a sprinkler tap and liquid soap dispensers. The tap and liquid soap dispensers are connected to foot pedals, reducing the risk of re-contaminating clean hands when turning off tap after use. With the water-efficient sprinkler tap, a unit could be used for 100 handwashes per 100 litres of water without needing to be refilled. Our sturdy, handsfree, water-efficient design provides an effective method for enhancing safety and sanitation. It is a scalable engineered solution due to simple manufacturing, installation and affordability.
