Clean Orbit is an advocacy platform for orbital sustainability, initiated to raise awareness of the risks posed by debris orbiting the Earth. Micrometeroids and orbital debris (MMOD) number in the millions and are the single greatest threat to operations in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Existing mitigation efforts are inadequate in addressing this growing threat. In the absence of international regulation and proper remediation efforts, orbital debris is left to accumulate in the atmosphere, endangering operations ranging from satellite functions to human spaceflight.While there are several concepts for debris remediation in development, Clean Orbit recommends pulsed laser active debris removal using laser ablation jets on targets as the most cost-effective way to re-enter debris of all sizes. No other existing solutions address the problem of large and small debris.
