The aged care industry provides older Australians with a range of different services, allowing them to access appropriate levels of care when and where they require it as they age. In delivering aged care services to the Australian community, the sector is both a vital supporter of the comfort and dignity of older Australians as well as an important contributor to the Australian economy - $13.5 billion in 2014-15 (Deloitte, 2016). The Aged Care Financing Authority (ACFA) estimates that 76,000 new residential aged care places will be required by 2023-24 in order to meet demand. This will reflect on the growth of its already a sizeable workforce - 350,000 in 2015 (Deloitte, 2016)Opportunities and challenges will emerge as the aged care sector moves forward on its journey towards a more consumer-centric system, as outlined in the Aged Care Roadmap realised in 2016. One of the challenges is demands placed on its workforce.
