The Center of Open Innovation for LEad Discovery, or COILED in short, is a newly established drug discovery center focusing on the identification and optimization of small-molecule modulators of Trained Immunity. Trained Immunity is a phenomenon discovered by Prof Mihai Netea (Experimental Internal Medicine, Radboudumc, Nijmegen, The Netherlands), who showed that, in contrast to general belief, the innate immune system has memory. Trained Immunity is the result of the DNA of the immune cells remaining in a state of high alert for several months following an infection. Disregulation of innate immune memory is associated with a number of disease areas with high unmet medical need such as; sepsis, auto-immune diseases, neurodegeneration and oncology. Modulating the epigenetic programs that control innate memory responses provides new strategies for developing innovative drugs. Key partners of COILED are the Radboud University Nijmegen, RadboudUMC, Pivot Park Screening Center, Inntrest and BioAxis Research.
