The Communal Spaces Initiative was born out of concern — concern about lack of public spaces in densely populated areas, some of which lie at the heart of Karachi. It's not that spaces do not exist, it's that the existing spaces are dilapidated. We believe that these spaces can be revitalized using the philosophy and approach of placemaking. The Initiative is intended to develop a model which can be applied to other places as well. Our pilot project is the revitalization of the historic and culturally rich Ghalib Library. It has a treasure trove of rare books which, first of all, need to be catalogued according to the latest technology available. We will then go on to making the physical space itself conducive to the needs of the community. All this, of course, requires funds, which we are working on generating.
