Community Action Council for Lexington-Fayette, Bourbon, Harrison and Nicholas Counties is a private, non-profit organization organized in 1965 to study the causes and effects of poverty in our communities and work toward solutions. The Council combats poverty by offering opportunities for low-income people to achieve self-sufficiency and providing services so that each community member and family is able to reach their full potential. The Council works to serve the low income population through advocacy, service delivery and community involvement. The Council makes things happen in our communities. Each year we work with more than 30,000 people who are seeking economic security and a chance to work toward self-sufficiency. We are more than programs and services. The Council is people working together for a common good through community partnerships, volunteerism and helping one another through difficult times. If the challenges faced by low income people are addressed and they have the same opportunities enjoyed by the majority of the community, then the quality of life for everyone is improved. The Council is a member of the Community Action Partnership, a national network of more than 1,000 community action agencies across the United States that fight poverty on the local level. We are also a member of Community Action Kentucky, the state association representing Kentucky's 23 community action agencies.
