Renewables & Environment - Nairobi, Nairobi County, Kenya
The Community Cooker is an innovative yet practical waste to energy stove that has immense potential for social, environmental and economic change in low resource settings around the world. Created by Kenyan architects at Planning Systems Services, Ltd. to alleviate waste problems in Kenya, its basic principle is simple: the community collects and burns rubbish to generate low cost heat that can be used for cooking, baking heating and boiling water. The Community Cooker Foundation was set up to improve the efficiency and design of this technology, promote its uses and educate the public regarding safe and responsible methods of incinerating rubbish for energy production, in densely populated areas. The Cooker has considerably improved the quality of life for individuals in low income areas by responsibly minimizing waste, reducing emissions from cooking and providing a cheaper alternative to wood fuel and charcoal. Furthermore, the Cooker is reducing youth unemployment through its labour intensive approach. The Community Cooker Foundation is focused on environmentally conscious operations and to this end, we work in close collaboration with SGS Kenya- the leading inspection, verification and and certification company to ensure any smoke released from the Cooker is within World Health Organization limits. The Community Cooker is committed to constant research and development. To that end, we are keen to partner with various institutions to further develop functions of the Cooker and optimize its impact.
