The Community Science Institute (CSI) is a not-for-profit 501c3 tax-exempt organization based in Ithaca whose mission is to empower citizens to monitor and protect water resources by monitoring water quality. CSI was founded in 2002 and has been monitoring local water quality ever since.CSI operates a state-certified water quality testing lab (NYSDOH-ELAP #11790) for testing stream water and private well samples. The CSI lab works in partnership with volunteer groups to collect scientifically credible data for use in protecting the environment and managing natural resources sustainably. Volunteer groups monitor at over 150 sites in the Cayuga Lake Watershed and monitor more than 1200 square miles in the Upper Susquehanna Basin. CSI publishes all data from monitoring events in their free online database at www.communityscience.org.In addition to volunteer programs, CSI offers comprehensive baseline testing on groundwater wells for homeowners seeking to protect their private water supplies from "hydrofracking." CSI has established baselines for over 200 homeowners, many of whom have agreed to submit their data to CSI's "Regional Baseline" database.
