Compañeros Inc was founded in 2001 as a private social enterprise and is legally registered in Canada and Nicaragua. It is dedicated to organizing volunteer service and cross-cultural learning programs for the purpose of equipping citizens to be more engaged in their communities in Canada and Nicaragua. With its proven track record of leveraging capital and catalysing volunteers, labour, contributors, non-profit agencies, faith-based organizations, and academic institutions, Compañeros effectively brings diverse people together to experience educational programs and community development projects. Each Compañeros program is designed and guided by Nicaraguan staff to provide participants with a well-organized, healthy, and holistic experience that benefits the group of visiting volunteers and the community in which development projects takes place. Most programs include staying with a host family, contributing to a community development project, meeting local leaders and partner organizations, cultural excursions, and time for reflection. Since 2001 Compañeros Inc. has coordinated 1,300 participants in 200 community development projects and 100 educational programs, each identified in close collaboration with local leaders, agencies and organizations in North and Central America and designed to hold mutual and reciprocal benefit. In 2016-17 Compañeros Inc is focusing on integrating six higher standards of practice in global service learning into its citizenship learning programs in Canada and into its education, health, housing, and water projects in Nicaragua.
