Conflict is a part of all relationships. It is a part of life and cannot be avoided. This is certainly true within the coach-athlete relationship. In athletics, coaches face a unique form of conflict. In athletics the stakes are high, identities are on the line, expectations are great and in most cases the ultimate performance and result are completely public, for all to see. Athletics has changed dramatically over the past 20, 30, 50 years. What used to be low-key is now high stakes at every level. Now all performances can be seen, analyzed, and commented on in real-time, for everyone to see. Pressure to perform, for coach and athlete, is higher than ever before in history, in every sport. Most often the athletes are young, with limited experience handling pressure and limited maturity. At the same time, the expectations from parents, extended family, friends, former coaches, communities, schools or organizations, and more are gigantic on athletes and coaches. These are some of the factors that fuel negative conflict for coaches. With 30-years experience leading programs at the NCAA I, NAIA and High School levels and coaching elite athletes and teams, combined with a Masters degree in Conflict Management, Bill Taylor saw a great need and a huge void in Coaches ability to identify and manage conflict successfully. He has seen the positive and negative impacts of conflict in coaching athletics. He has also experienced the cultural and environmental changes that have changed athletics, that have increased the visibility, criticism and pressure of athletics, and have increased the amount and type of conflict that coaches, programs and athletes face now. Managing conflict successfully is now a real factor in a coach, athlete and programs success...more than ever before.Conflict for Coaches exists to impact the world of athletics with the skills and tools to successfully manage Conflict so coaches and teams can have more joy and success.
