The mission of Conscious Community Yoga Association, Inc. contains two key elements:1. To provide specialized training and assistance in strengthening cultural bonds in order to build the capacity of certified Hatha Yoga teachers to offer yoga and movement classes that serve the specific needs of Native American and people living with disabilities and/or addictions."2. Connect members of these populations with free, accessible yoga classes and guided walks. Why We ExistIn her second yoga class, the woman who is overweight with ankle and knee problems learns about how her feet ground her. She takes a foot in her hands and, as instructed, puts a finger between each toe and slowly rotates her ankle. Her brief exposure to yoga has already helped her understand that she can overcome obstacles in her disability. She shares her thoughts in that moment. "You know young children play with their feet all the time." She smiles and recalls a memory. "I watched my granddaughter play with her foot. She told me that she likes her feet because they help her stand up and then she can take a stand just like her grandmother does." Conscious Community Yoga Association, Inc. ("CCYoga") helps people stand up and The Need There are many yoga studios in the United States, but the concept of putting teachers into situations that are designed to match their skills with the needs of a specific group is rare. In Western culture, the practice of yoga tends to focus on the physical benefits. It is a "health club" approach. We want to bring full benefits to students. Hatha yoga, as practiced by CCYoga teachers, is an ancient discipline that integrates body, mind, and spirit. It is a self-care system that brings vitality, health, deep relaxation, and peace of mind. Its practitioners bring healthful consciousness to communities. We seek to create an inner strength in the students that, in turn, will enhance the core strength of the community.
