Higher Education - Mountain Iron, Minnesota, United States
Our Mission at Convergence on Campus is to enhance college and university campus climates for religious, secular, and spiritual identities through policy and practice.Convergence on Campus, Inc. empowers campus professionals to move towards a future of diversity work that removes stigmas, opens communication, and fully incorporates religious, secular, and spiritual identities into the broader life of the university. We focus on professionalizing this field with higher education and religious life professionals, and supporting campus-wide conversations and policy shifts around religious, secular, and spiritual identities. From moments to movements:In September 1998, Wellesley College hosted an event called Education as Transformation (EaST). Engaging almost 800 people from all over the United States and around the world, EaST laid the groundwork for studies, journal articles, and other initiatives that continue to raise awareness about the need to support religious, secular, and spiritual identities on university campuses.Notable studies and programs that followed from EaST include the UCLA Higher Education Research Institute (HERI), the Interfaith Youth Core, and the Interfaith Diversity Experiences & Attitudes Longitudinal Study (IDEALS). Each of these has radically impacted the ways higher education approaches diversity work for religious, secular, and spiritual identifying students. Additionally, efforts by NASPA – the largest student affairs organization in the United States – and the Council of Advancement of Standards' (CAS) revision of their policies regarding religious, secular, and spiritual programs demonstrates that now is the time to institute large scale policy and practice changes within higher education. With the launch of Convergence, campus professionals in the United States and Canada have a new opportunity: To join one another, building upon this wealth of experience and information, and focus on creating safe and open environments that support religious, secular, and spiritual identities of all members of the campus community.
