In recent times, competition policy and regulatory issues have moved to the forefront of microeconomics in Australia. Economic analysis is increasingly required for complex issues in infrastructure industries (e.g., telecommunications, energy and transport) as well as financial services and banking. These needs complement previous demands for analysis in trade practices and anti-trust matters (e.g., merger analysis, abuse of market power and consequences of price fixing). As issues have become more complex, the value of sophisticated and more technical tools of analysis has grown. It was for this purpose that CoRE Research was founded in 2001. Our central belief is that sound economic analysis rests on maintaining a tight link between the forefront of economic research and developments in policy. CoRE was founded by Professors Joshua Gans and Stephen King. Professor King left in 2004 to become a member of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission but returned in 2009.We employ academic researchers in industrial organisation and regulatory economics who also have many years of experience in analysing competition and regulatory issues in the broader policy arena. It is this union of established research contribution and extensive policy experience that is the hallmark of the work of CoRE Research.
