The mission of the Cornell Food and Brand Lab is to change how food is purchased, prepared, and consumed. Using new tools of behavioral science, we invent healthy eating solutions for consumers, companies, and communities. We invent, redesign, and empower.Started in 1997, the Food and Brand Lab has grown into an internationally recognized, one of a kind, Food Psychology and Consumer Behavior research lab. We are an interdisciplinary group of faculty, students, and Post-Doctoral researchers from psychology, food science, nutrition, marketing, behavioral economics and agricultural economics. We discover how humans relate to food with the end goal of uncovering solutions to improve eating environments and help individuals eat better. In addition to self-funding a great deal of our research, the Food and Brand Lab receives support from a variety of sources including competitive federal grants from agencies such as the National Institute of Health and the US Department of Agriculture, Private Industry, Not for Profits and Research Foundations. Our research has also driven the creation of the Cornell Center for Behavioral Economics in Child Nutrition Programs (BEN) which is a center devoted to funding research concerning children's dietary health. Subsequently, the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement was developed to conduct research in school lunchrooms and disseminate findings nationwide. Currently about 30,000 schools across the US participate in the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement. The Food and Brand Lab was founded at the University of Illinois in 1997 by Professor Brian Wansink and moved to Cornell University in 2005. Dr. Wansink remains director of the Lab today.
