The CRIPT is a laboratory in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Western Ontario. The mission is to create and explore visual and perceptual media in order to study education and learning as it pertains to anatomy. We use a plethora of tools to do both create anatomical images and then use a variety of experimental approaches to study student performance, perception, as it pertain to cognitive load. Our lab is entirely student run. We have undergraduate, Master of Science, and Doctoral students all doing unique work. We create 3D images utilizing segmentation principles and high resolution anatomical scans. Our methods are well published and we have success using a variety of free and consumer-level software. To test our models in pedagogy, we utilize a variety of approaches from qualitative methods surrounding the impacts of image on social interaction to monitoring physiological outcomes and behaviours of individuals utilizing these digital tools. The CRIPT is open to collaborations with other educational and private groups who wish to explore human perception as it pertains to improving the quality of education in post-secondary education, simulation, and apprenticeship scenarios.
