Public Safety - New York, NY, US
Founded in 1844, the Correctional Association of New York (the CA) is an independent non-profit organization that advocates for a more humane and effective criminal justice system and a more just and equitable society. The only private organization in New York with unrestricted access to prisons, the CA has remained steadfast in its commitment to inform the public debate on criminal justice for over 165 years. Utilizing its unique legislative mandate to expose abusive practices, the CA educates the public and policymakers about what goes on behind prison walls, and advocates for systemic, lasting and progressive change in the criminal justice system. Employing a strategic model of research, policy analysis, prison-monitoring, coalition building, leadership development and advocacy, the CA's overarching goals are to: • stop the ineffective use of incarceration as a response to the socio-economic problems facing our communities; • ensure that conditions in prisons are humane and that the rights of incarcerated people and their families are protected; • promote transparency and accountability in the justice system and hold government and prison officials responsible for reform; and • change the power-dynamics of policy-making and provide opportunities for the people most affected by incarceration to become leaders and active participants in efforts for reform.
