Farming - San Francisco, California, United States
Over the past century, we've allowed industries to destroy our precious land. Land misuse is as much a socioeconomic problem as it as biophysical problem and there's an inherent link between land sovereignty and inequality. Our mission is to create local economies, where communities are actively in control over the resources around them. Through consensual community engagement, we source land projects in federally-designated Opportunity Zones, which offer tax advantages to our investors, and are often where the harshest food deserts exist. We take degraded, misused, or idle land through remediation efforts that bring entire ecosystems back to life. Co:Terra Farms utilizes ancient and modern techniques, specifically permaculture, agroforestry, and vertical farming. We have identified over 30 ideal products with short harvest times, low footprints, and high profit margins, including fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, oilseeds, and shelf-stable products, like medicinals. 100% of our product is delivered directly to consumers within 100 miles of the land, mainly through CSA boxes, but also farmers markets, restaurant partnerships, and our onsite farm stores. Our farms are more than farms though. If land sovereignty is life, we must respect that life isn't just about financial prosperity. The true spatial value of our land is in the many other forms of capital it generates – the jobs it provides, the educational opportunities, including nutritional and financial literacy, and the co-created community events. We operate as a Solidarity Co-op, meaning we have multiple owner groups - Community, Stewards, Investors - each with a unique share of equity. For systems as complex as food, we need diverse interests at the table in an ongoing relationship of equals. We must urgently rethink the way we use land. Co:Terra Farms is and will continue to actively be a part of the solution, for this generation, and for future generations to come.
