We, photographer Anaïs López, filmmaker Anisleidy Martínez and writer Paulien Bakker went to L'Esperance Children's Village, on the edge of Lake Kivu, in November 2014. The plan was to follow the lives of some kids after they left the orphanage to tell their stories and raise awareness. The visit gave us the idea to use our equipment and time (and some extra cameras lent by Canon NL) to teach some photography to the 32 remaining children—the ones no one wanted—so that they could capture their lives and feelings before the changes the closure would bring.Through the camera lens the children learned to look at themselves and their world differently. They photographed their friends, brothers and sisters – just before they were separated and in many cases sent to live miles away from each other. Their pictures and stories were moving, sometimes heartbreaking, and the idea was formed to create a notebook with the photos for them to hold on to their memories.
