Creating Space Detroit is based in the Bagley neighborhood of Detroit and currently focusing its efforts within that area. Bagley is a neighborhood that was largely built in the 1920's and consists of over 5000 homes. It has held up well over the years, without having too many burned out or demolished structures in the area. The residents tend to be long term and have a great deal of pride in their homes and community. Unfortunately, the urban design that went into building the neighborhood in the 1920s did not include any community space for the residents. The children, when they try to play outdoors, are forced to play on sidewalks and in streets. Most parents today keep their children indoors for understandable reasons but as studies show, children that grow up without outdoor access have long term negative side effects both physically and mentally.Creating Space Detroit will change this narrative for the Bagley Community. We have begun the change already by purchasing and converting the two identified empty lots into a park (the first part of the larger project). The park is meant to serve the entire community, not only the children, and give residents a place where they can rest on benches, enjoy a bit of nice landscaping, and use an available gazebo for social gatherings with family and friends.
