The Convention against Torture Initiative, launched in 2014 is an inter-governmental, cross-regional endeavour aspiring to strengthen institutions, policies and practices for dignified and rule-based governance and reduce and prevent the risks of torture and ill-treatment. CTI's work focuses on the UN Convention against Torture as the principal international instrument establishing essential elements of effective torture prohibition, prevention and response. An initiative by and for governments, CTI is led by Chile, Denmark, Fiji, Ghana, Indonesia and Morocco, and engages other states through constructive dialogue and exchange, technical assistance, capacity-building support and hosting a platform for information and knowledge dissemination. The Initiative is supported by a full-time Secretariat based in Geneva, and is bolstered by a Group of Friends comprising UN Member States, NGOs, torture prevention experts, academics and a wealth of related subject matter experts.
