Fashion cultures have been a center of attention for decades, with thinkers questioning the importance of fashion for centuries. More recently, and especially in the past few decades, scholars of the subject have come together under the field of "fashion studies."Yet the fact that scholars dedicate their research to fashion is still surprising to some. As a research area, fashion studies builds on history, cultural studies, design and film studies, curatorial practices, social sciences, and the humanities. As scholars dedicated to fashion studies, we tend to borrow methodologies from a wide range of disciplines and bring them together in order to understand fashion as a social phenomenon. However, and despite the rise in fashion studies among English- and French-speaking scholars, the fashion cultures of other areas of the world has not been as thoroughly studied. Part of the problem may lie in that the theories used to understand fashion in the Euro-North-American contexts cannot be easily extended to other parts of the world. More important is the weak engagement in languages other than English and French. We believe, therefore, that we still need to engage with fashion, in a "serious" and critical manner, in Spanish. We need to talk about local fashion in its specific and diverse contexts and realities. It is our mission, therefore, to enlighten conversations about fashion in Spanish, and to foster the development of a critical thinking of fashion as it is lived in the Spanish-speaking world. We invite you to join CULTURAS DE MODA to enter the conversation.
