Education/Training - N/A, N/A, US
A major shift is happening in dance & dance education. College enrollment is down for the 8th year in a row. NEARLY 300,000 FEWER students enrolled in college this spring compared to last. Some schools are expanding their dance departments, Goucher College, but more are reducing or eliminating their programs - Hiram College, Penn State, University of Akron, University of Missouri-St. Louis, Washington State University. Some programs continue to have 1,000+ dance applicants while others struggle to fill their spots. Dancers do not receive the same support or information. They need better information to help them find their path. About the Dance Path ProjectThe Dance Path Project was started to fill the gaps high school dancers experience during their program search. We wanted to create a tool that is unbiased, transparent, and all-inclusive that will help dancers overcome some of the obstacles they encounter: Most high school guidance counselors aren't dancers, so they don't know how to help. Some districts are more focused on other paths like STEM, which leaves artists to fend for themselves. None of the college search tools provide the information dancers need (ask to see our report The Information Dancers Need to Make a Choice) * Many dancers use online rankings instead of looking at a schools/program's fit - then they drop out or transfer when it's not what they expected. * Some dancers have no support at all! They don't know where to turn for help so may not make the best choice or not choose dance at all! * A local dance teacher knows some of the programs and options available, but there are too many to know them all. * A Parent or dance teacher may have a personal bias for or against a program.
