Criminal defense attorney. Experienced criminal defense in federal and all state courts. Admitted to practice in Alaska in 1983. 1983-1995, private practice emphasizing civil litigation and trial work. 1995-2003, Assistant Public Advocate, Alaska Office of Public Avocacy. In 1997 appointed to the State of Alaska's only position as a statewide public defense attorney handling primarily unclassified and class A felony cases, including murder, manslaughter, first-degree assault, kidnapping, sexual assault, and sexual abuse of minors. Defense and trial of kidnapping, murder, and sexual assault cases throughout Alaska, including Nome, Dillingham, Juneau, Kenai, Palmer, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Bethel, Naknek, Seward, St. Paul, Sitka, Kotzebue, and Petersberg. Appellate case work, including successful appeals to the Alaska Supreme Court, resulting in reversals of decisions by the Alaska Court of Appeals. In 2003 left state service and founded the Law Offices of Darrel J. Gardner. Left private practice in 2012 to join the Office of the Federal Defender for the District of Alaska.
