Channeling the torrents of system- and user-generated data in today's dynamic web ecosystems like search engines, social media, open data initiatives, and web sites into actionable information is the main challenge for many organizations and industries. The goal should not be to store more and more data, but to extract value from event data readily available. Moreover, these data include a substantial amount of personal data that are considered to be "the new oil of the Internet and the new currency of the digital world" that give "untapped opportunities for socioeconomic growth" (World Economic Forum report, 2011). How-ever, there are serious privacy issues involved in these settings. To meet these challenges and to grab the opportunities, both new knowledge and new techniques are required, but industry also needs increasing numbers of people that can turn data into knowledge and value. Data Science Center serves these different objectives: new knowledge, new web technologies, and education of new data science professionals.
