We have a close connection to Alzheimer's because my mother was diagnosed with the condition when she was 64 years old. In 2010, she stopped walking, eating and going to the bathroom by herself and by 2011, she could not remember us. On September 8, 2017, Mom passed away. My grandmother and three other aunts and uncles were also Alzheimer's patients. On June 22, 2014 and June 27, 2015, we joined the campaign called The Longest Day; an initiative from the Alzheimer's Association of the United States. The main goals of these events were to raise awareness about the disease, send a message of solidarity in view of the challenges posed by Alzheimer's Disease, as well as raise funds for scientific investigations and the development of public policy to benefit patients and caregivers. On these events, more than 500 people walked and ran with us from sunrise to sunset to support these initiatives.Surely, said campaigns gave us the opportunity to become acquainted with the multiple financial and emotional needs that both patients and caregivers face on a daily basis. After all, the costs associated to caring for an Alzheimer's patient are approximately $3,000 per month. With that, it was that on June 24, 2016 "De Frente al Alzheimer's" was created; a not-for-profit corporation organized under the Laws of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico to provide financial support to pre-qualified low income Alzheimer's patients.Latin singer, Víctor Manuelle, joined us in our efforts and on September 2015 the first massive awareness walk, Camina por tu Héroe, took place. Because we have a profound compromise with Puerto Rico's Alzheimer low income patients, our awareness and fundraising efforts will continue: June 20, 2019, "6th Longest Day for Alzheimer's"; September 2019, "Camina por tu Héroe 4".
