What are words worth?The English language; with over 983 million native speakers it is the second most spoken language in the world. It is the modern lingua franca. The International language of Aviation, Science, Music, Film and so much more. It is a cliché, and an inaccurate one at that, to say that English has more words than any other language. Certainly, English has very many words and unlike most other European languages English has had so many influences it really is something of an amalgam, a melting pot overflowing with words. Whose words?While working at News International in London as lay-out artist, compositor and proof reader, I was challenged daily and I gained a valuable understanding of the English written word. In 1991 I moved to The Netherlands and after studying Dutch I started working at our family business in metal processing. Being an International Company handling business in the petrochemical and shipping industries, English has always been frequently used. Whilst working in accounts and finance at the company I was also required to proof read and correct translated company brochures, to check product information sheets and transcribe user guides. Friends, associates and colleagues would also ask me to proof read documents, check reports and interpret English for them.This was the beginning of Decode Translation Services.
