Based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Despina is non-profit cultural association whose mission is to create a vibrant platform for production, dissemination and collaboration in the field of contemporary art. The organisation is responsible for the projects in course at Largo das Artes, a contemporary art center with a gallery, art studios, courses and a Residency Programme, which has hosted approximately 50 artists from over 15 countries. The partnership Despina - Largo das Artes is based around the following proposals:- create a lively, supportive and dynamic environment for the development and exhibition of contemporary art- facilitate experimentation and innovation in contemporary art practices by stimulating dialogue betweenrtists and across cultures- encourage the professional development of artists- widen access to contemporary art, instigating critical thinking- contribute to the urban and cultural revitalization of the city centre of Rio de Janeiro, where the space is located.Four major exhibition projects a year are held in the gallery space. They are curated by invitation with views to contextualise artworks within critical frameworks. The space also holds several art studios, occupied by artists who live and work in Rio de Janeiro and by artists in residence. Despina Residency Programme at Largo das Artes is designed for emerging artists wishing to immerse themselves in their work and to develop a project in Rio de Janeiro while receiving professional feedback and support. Despina Residency Programme encourages professional development, artistic exchange and international contacts.In 2016, Despina | Largo das Artes will join thirteen other outstanding Network Partners as part of the Prince Claus Fund's Grants and Collaborations programme. Two cultural organisations are invited per year to propose a project to be completed in collaboration with the Prince Claus Fund.
