Mental Health Care - Pembroke, Ontario, Canada
We are a clothing brand with the goal of "de-stigmatizing" the way people see mental health, while raising money through the profits of the clothing sales as well as through our community events. Striving to help those who are struggling in silence that there is no shame in speaking up, and that they are not alone in their battle.Unfortunately Destig's start is not as positive as the message we are trying to spread. The idea to start this brand came from losing one of the my closest friends, who was one of the most fun loving, friendly, and caring person I've ever known. He had been struggling with his mental health, and one night he made a public snapchat story at around 3:30am, with the caption "This is what extreme depression looks like..". I reached out to him as soon we saw it, asking him how he was doing and if he wanted to talk about it; but got the typical "I'm doing okay dude, but thanks for checking in". That was April 13th 2018. April 18th, 2018 - we lost him.Since that day I've wished he was able to open up and talk about it. Theres no knowing what would have happened if he had, but it's hard not to imagine that talking about it could have helped him.Since that point almost 2 years, we have been able to raise approximately $37,000 for the Robbie Dean Centre - the local mental health institution that receives 0 government funding, but does not charge any fees for their services.Mental Health is becoming a bigger and bigger aspect of our society, effecting more people than ever. We need to come together and help everyone to see that the brain is just like any other organ in the body and can become ill. There is no stigmatization that shames patients with asthma, an illness of the lungs, so why do we as a society put the stigma on an illness of the brain? Thank you for taking the time to check us out, have a great day!
