Destiny Community Cafe, a member of One World Everybody Eats, is South Carolina's first and only pay-what-you-can cafe operating in the greater Charleston area. Suggested donations are usually $10 for a full-course meal, but no one is turned away due to a lack of funds. The pay-what-you-can philosophy works this way: "If your pockets are light, you pay what you can. If they're heavy, you can pay more to help others. If they're empty, enjoy a meal. You can volunteer with us if you are able." In addition to customers at the cafe, Destiny regularly delivers to community partners, including hotels that help veterans experiencing homelessness, senior homes, and community centers. This summer, Destiny has collaborated with The Stone Soup Collective to provide healthy, plant-based meals to children and teens for free. Menu items at the cafe change daily, reflecting seasonal produce and guest chef specialties. Vegan options are always available. Destiny has featured a diversity of food selections from a variety of chefs, including Ethoipain cuisine, Latin cuisines, and more. However, you can almost always find authentic soul food here, cooked by the Founder and Executive Director herself, Ragina Scott Saunders, a Gullah/Geechee native from James Island. The Cafe maintains its outreach operations through generous donations, volunteers, and self-funding through Mrs. Saunders.
