The City of Detroit Office of Inspector General (OIG) was established by the 2012 Charter of the City of Detroit. The purpose of the office is to ensure honesty and integrity in city government by rooting out waste, abuse, fraud, and corruption. The Office of Inspector General investigates the actions of city employees, elected and appointed city officials, all other public servants as defined by the City Charter, contractors and vendors who do business with the city. The office is headed by the Inspector General, who is appointed to a single six-year term by the Detroit City Council. The office is staffed by investigators, auditors and attorneys who assist the Inspector General in carrying out charter-mandated functions. Citizens and employees play an important role in assisting the Office of Inspector General in rooting out fraud, abuse, waste, and corruption in city government and contracting.
