Transportation/trucking/railroad - Zurzach, Aargau, Switzerland
After the opening of the Furka Base Tunnel in 1982, railway enthusiasts prevented the demolition of the tracks leading over the mountain. In 1983 they founded the Furka Mountain Route Association (VFB) with the aim of restoring, maintaining and operating the high-alpine and unique railway. Over one hundred years old steam locomotives operate on the historic route, which together with their wagons have been restored to match the era. This valuable rolling stock looks like it has been created again today. Some of the steam locomotives had been sold from Switzerland to Vietnam in 1947 and were brought back from the jungle in an elaborate operation in 1990 and put into operation. Volunteers, mainly in the Aarau workshop, have professionally restored the various passenger and company cars from different origins and equipped them for use on the mountain route. Volunteers from different professions also take care of the maintenance of the route and the facilities as well as all areas of administration, marketing and IT. DFB AG itself works in its processes and structures like a modern small and medium-sized enterprise (SME). The Furka Mountain Line Steam Railway is organized as follows today: DFB AG: The Furka Mountain Line Steam Railway is a public limited company, license holder and operator of the railway according to the professional and safe guidelines of the Federal Office of Transport. The institution is responsible for the operation, construction and maintenance of the vehicles and systems. Furka Mountain Route Association (VFB): The Furka Mountain Route Association today has over 7,000 memberships with sections in Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands. The main tasks of the association include voluntary work, fundraising and public relations. Furka Mountain Route Foundation (SFB): The Foundation owns the facilities and some of the vehicles. She is responsible for that
