Primary/secondary Education - London, England, United Kingdom
DigiSmart is a motivating literacy catch-up programme that improves the reading and wider literacy of under-achieving 9-11 year-olds, together with boosting self-esteem and raising aspirations. Every year over 100,000 children from low-income backgrounds leave primary school unable to read, write or communicate at the expected level for their age, despite all of them having the potential to succeed. They move on to secondary school with the stigma of failure. DigiSmart gives these children incentives to read and opportunities to develop comprehension, speaking and listening skills so that they can reach (or exceed) the expected standard before the end of primary school. Over 23,000 children have already become DigiSmart. The initiative works in partnership with schools and local authorities. A three-year expansion is in progress and, in the 2014-15 academic year, DigiSmart is close to partnering with 1,000 primary schools across England and Wales. DigiSmart is developed and managed by LIFT for Learning (LIFT), a charitable organisation: www.lift.org.uk
