Nonprofit Organization Management - Washington, District of Columbia, United States
District Mugs is a small volunteer group that introduces entrepreneurship and business concepts to homeless men and women in Washington, D.C., by teaching them how to design, market, and sell coffee mugs. Participants in the District Mugs program also have the opportunity to earn a small income from the production and sale of their coffee mugs.We partner with other charities in D.C. to identify homeless persons who might benefit from our program. As a part of our efforts, we conduct weekly teaching and designing workshops and organize pop-ups where the mugs are marketed and sold. In the past we have conducted weekend pop-ups at reputed stores such as West Elm and Pottery Barn, art fairs such as the George Washington University Annual Art Fair, and restaurants such as Mellow Mushroom and sold our mugs for $10 each. In their first six weeks with District Mugs, participants spend one hour each week learning basic business concepts and a second hour designing mugs. After six weeks, participants graduate from the business classes and can participate in pop-up sales hosted by District Mugs.District Mugs is fiscally sponsored by the Federation Neighborhood Center (FNC) in Philadelphia; the FNC offers us its 501c3 status and performs all the administrative, legal, and accounting functions for District Mugs in lieu of 10% of our revenues.
