Drew's parents, David and Kimberly Hughes, are the founders of the Do It for Drew Foundation. From the very first hour, there was such an outpouring of love and support from their community, they knew immediately that they wanted to give back. As they learned of the medical errors that took Drew's life, they knew that changes in medical care had to be made. Sharing Drew's story would make a difference and help so many people in the future. The foundation focuses on 3 main goals:First, The Do It For Drew Foundation feels passionately that they can bring awareness and education regarding Drew's case, improve emergency medical care in rural communities like their own, and can help prevent other families from going through what they have had to endure.Secondly, the foundation raises money to support recreational and school athletics. We know how beneficial these programs were for Drew and his older brothers. David volunteered as a coach many times over the years and saw first-hand how team sports build character in a young person's life. And lastly, they have formed The Drew Hughes Memorial Scholarship, to be given annually to a local High School student. The first recipient will be from Drew's 2017 graduating class. The criteria will revolve around Drew's admirable character traits. In the future we hope to expand this program to encourage young people to treat others as they would like to be treated and to understand that, as Drew said, "Your choices make your life."
