Wine & Spirits - San Juan, Puerto Rico, United States
Making wine is, and always has been, a family affair for the Portets. The Portet family holds an unmatched record in the Australian wine industry, Dominique is the ninth generation in his family to be committed to winemaking. Now, as tenth generation winemaker Ben Portet returns to the family's Yarra Valley winery, the legacy continues. Arriving in Australia in 1976, Dominique quickly became an integral part of the Victorian wine industry. In 2000 he found the site he had long looked for and in the twinkling of an eye built his winery and cellar door, planting a quixotic mix of viognier, sauvignon blanc and merlot next to the winery. Son Ben is now executive winemaker, leaving Dominique with a roving role as de facto consultant and brand marketer. Ben has a winemaking CV of awesome scope, covering all parts of France, South Africa, California and four vintages at Petaluma. The cellar door has a French country feel, and the terrace café serves light foods from the winemaker's table. Wine quality is exemplary across the board, and the serene surrounding landscape is the Yarra Valley at its best. Exports to Canada, The Netherlands, Denmark, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Japan.
