Research - East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, United States
The East Stroudsburg University (ESU) Northeast Wildlife DNA Laboratory is an extension of the Biological Sciences Department at ESU. The Lab was founded in 2005 by distinguished professor of Biology Jane Huffman, Ph.D. and has since been established as one of the leading tick testing laboratories in the U.S. and the only tick testing lab in Pennsylvania that provides tickborne pathogen identification to the public. The DNA Lab currently test thousands of ticks each year and utilizes the data for surveillance of tick species and infection rates across the Commonwealth. Additionally, the DNA Lab completes wildlife forensic casework for private and public state agencies and is one of few wildlife forenic laboratories across the country. The first commercialized faculty-student research project, in the 124 year history of ESU, was also generated from the Lab. In July 2017, ESU announced its affiliation with EPA Enterprises, Inc. and Garrett Hewitt International to rebrand Lyme-Aid under the internationally recognized CUTTER brand. Lyme-Aid, a tick testing kit for people and pets, was developed at ESU. The DNA Lab also provides tick testing services for TickCheck,cLLC., a web-based portal for comprehensive tick testing and identification.
