Political Organization - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
Draw the Lines PA (drawthelinespa.org) is a multiyear, statewide public mapping competition that aims to put into the hands of students and voters the same digital tools and data that political operatives use to draw their egregiously gerrymandered maps. Using the free DistrictBuilder platform, and inspired by Draw the Lines' contest format, citizen mappers will learn that, within hours, they can produce election maps that express common sense and democratic values far more than the maps drawn by self-interested politicians do. The project's goal is to create a large cohort of citizens who are ready, willing and able to do this core work of democracy, and insistent that this is now their work to do. In schools, colleges, libraries, civic groups, faith centers, retirement communities - anywhere that people care about democracy - Draw the Lines will bring people together to draw electoral maps that embody their vision for how representative democracy should work. By running a series of mapping contests for students and adults, DTL will make this process more enticing and fun. And, by rolling up their sleeves to do the work of making maps, participants will gain a unique sense of buy-in and mastery about the issue.DTL will seek to nurture that sense of efficacy into a flame of sustained engagement. We'll show participants how to share their maps with lawmakers and opinion leaders, creating an army in support of reforms that would make the redistricting process more transparent, interactive and fair. DTL and its use of the free DistrictBuilder platform by Azavea will create a template for citizen action around the gerrymandering issue that can be emulated in states across the nation in advance of the next redistricting in 2021.
