ECFMG is a world leader in promoting quality health care. Through our work, we provide services to many different individuals and organizations worldwide, including physicians, members of the medical education and regulatory communities, health care consumers, and researchers studying medical education and health workforce planning to name just a few. A critical component of ECFMG's mission is serving physicians. Our work and our services make a difference in the education and training of physicians, in the ability of physicians to establish their qualifications, and in the creation of knowledge about what makes a strong physician workforce. In short, our work enables physicians to deliver better health care. ECFMG provides services to international physicians who want to enter the U.S. health care system and to physicians working all over the world. International physicians—you'll also hear them referred to as "IMGs" a lot, which stands for international medical graduates—make up about one-quarter of the physician workforce in the United States. These physicians enter the U.S. health care system as residents in U.S. graduate medical education (GME) programs, where they receive medical specialty training and provide supervised patient care. ECFMG provides a range of programs that support physicians as they pursue GME, medical licensure, and professional development in the United States; specifically ECFMG Certification is required by the ACGME for IMGs to enter residency training in ACGME-accredited programs. At ECFMG, we also register IMGs for the United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®), assist them with the residency application process, sponsor foreign national physicians for the J-1 visa to participate in U.S. residency programs, and a whole lot more.
