India is one of the youngest nations in the world with more than 62% of its population in the working age group (15 – 59 years), and around 54%, below 25 years of age. Due to the growing dividend between young and old, India today, has a big potential to maximize its economic gains and trigger exponential growth in its overall productivity. Young India needs to leverage the advantage of "demographic gift", and get us to the state of reaching sustainable economic growth. However, for this to happen, our youth today needs to be exposed to quality vocational education and training. Our Universities churn out thousands of graduates and postgraduates every year. These men and women, after acquiring the degrees, consider themselves fit for white collared jobs. However, they often find themselves unemployed or unsuitable for many jobs. While millions of jobs couldn't be filled, youth unemployment is always high year to year. Unfortunately, a huge number of unemployed people have only academic degrees. This is a conundrum resulted from the skills shortages of workforce, all over the country. The lack of a formal degree and the belief that the vocational track is only suitable for people from a lesser financial background has resulted in the declining popularity of this area. While students from a middle-class background are lured into academic pursuits and take up conventional degrees, pursuing a vocational education has remained a less-explored avenue.Vocational education is primarily non-academic in nature and offers practical training and skills needed to pursue an occupation straightaway. It provides students with courses directly aligned to land a job in a chosen profession or a skilled trade. The end result of vocational education is to enable an individual to attain self-employment.
