BACKGROUNDIn 2013 Lindsay Sanner established Eco Moyo Education Centre as a Norwegian foundation, with the goal of assisting children from poor families with education in Kenya. Since then, many people have joined the project and today we are building a primary school in a rural village, roughly 30 minutes drive outside Kilifi town. The school opened in May 2017 with three classes. As funds allow, we plan on expanding until a full primary school is completed for 200 students from class 1 to 8. Our mission is to engage an international network of volunteers, donors and partners to offer free primary education for all the children in Nzunguni village.OUR SITUATIONAs per September 2017 we have 70 students, where 10 of them live on campus in a student home.We are dependant on donations from overseas for the schools running costs and have 20 monthly sponsors. Friends and family help us with fundraising and have initiated charity-auctions, Christmas calendars, etc. We hope to one day become a financially, self sufficient school and are currently looking into cultivation and sale of mushrooms as a future income.EDUCATION IN KENYADespite Kenya claiming education in government schools is free, many are unable to afford the uniforms, textbooks and exam fees. The National Kenyan Curriculum focuses primarily on academic achievement with little room for creative or practical subjects. Luckily, a new system is on the way, but still being trialled around the country.In 2015 we purchased a 10 acre plot where we have built roads, fenced the entire site, drilled a borehole, installed water tanks and done loads of construction: In addition to three classrooms, four school toilets, an office, a school kitchen and three staff units for our teachers, we have built a dormitory for 20 students from Mombasa (where we originally started the project). Members of staff include a manager, two teachers, a headmaster, two matrons and two watchmen. Lindsay does not receive a salary.
