EcoStandard South Africa is a proudly South African, Non Profit Organisation (NPO) that has developed the EcoProduct eco-label for materials. EcoProduct is a Third Party audited measurement tool to identify building products that demonstrate responsible environmental practice. If a building product meets the criteria set out by EcoStandard it will be given an eco-label that will allow it to be easily identifiable by architects, engineers, contractors, retailers and the general public wishing to make environmentally conscious decisions when sourcing building materials. EcoProduct is based on a lifecycle assessment approach in terms of the ISO14024 Environmental labels and declarations — Type I environmental labeling — Principles and procedures in order to provide a holistic assessment of a building product. This means that all stages of the life of the product will be considered from sourcing raw materials, manufacturing, packaging and distribution, product use and end of life. A scoring of up to five (5) stars can be obtained. Products will be given a score for each of the life cycle categories resulting in a star rating from 1 to 5 stars. Each life-cycle category of the assessment tool is equally weighted and products can score a maximum of 20 points per category. A star rating is assigned to the product based on the total score as follows:• 1 star - 16 to 36 points• 2 stars - 36 to 52 points• 3 stars - 52 to 68 points• 4 stars - 68 to 84 points• 5 stars - 84 to 100 points
