"All seem to share an intense conviction that the world needs to be photographed if it is to be understood: that the medium exists to make us look again, to see the world with fresh eyes, in all its astounding complexity."(Michael Ignatieff, 'Magnum: Degree', 2003:152)Ed Giles is a photojournalist and videographer, based in Sydney when he finds the fortitude to stand still for any length of time. Ed has worked in Iran, Israel/Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Burma, Nepal, the Caribbean and French Polynesia among other corners of the world. His work has been published in Australia and internationally, including in The Independent, Reuters' "Editors Choice", ABC News Australia, The Age, The Herald Sun and The Sydney Morning Herald. As an extension of his photo and video work Ed plays increasingly with forms of "multimedia photojournalism", seeking ways to extend the power of print-based photojournalism into the online arena. Through this maintains close ties with the University of New South Wales' Media School, where he gained an Honours degree in Media and Communication and subsequently worked as a tutor during 2009.During 2010 Ed will undertake an internship with the NOOR Images photographic agency in Amsterdam. After this, no doubt the itchy feet will take control once more and Ed expects to base himself in the Middle East after June 2010.
