Nonprofit Organization Management - Springfield, Missouri, United States
What we are doing:To address the fundamental problem of homelessness in Springfield, Missouri, Eden Village is building tiny homes in a gated community that will provide residences with all services needed. The village will include: 30 homes, a community center that provides all social services, vegetable gardens, craft and building center, and a memorial garden. Once this property is fully funded, it is our intent to continue developing more property and eradicating homelessness in Springfield, MO.How we got started:The Eden Village project was started by the Gathering Tree (Missouri 501 (c)(3) non-profit corporation). The Gathering Tree has served the homeless population for 8 years by providing a coffee shop-like environment for the homeless population in downtown Springfield, MO. Through the community at Gathering Tree, we have engaged, befriended, and began to understand the needs of the homeless population.Current Solutions:The current model in cities usually provide temporary shelters as a roof and bed, but serve more as a band-aid, or treatment instead of providing a solution. Disaggregated services are too difficult to access for a homeless person, and are often too costly for organizations to address all needs. Coordinated medical, social, and community services are important, but this still doesn't solve the fundamental fact that the homeless still have no home. Our Solution:Eden Village is designed not simply to treat the effects of homelessness, but to address the fundamental problem. Eden Village provides: homes, support services, and establishes policies and rules of order to provide a positive sense of community.Where the project is at:The project started in May of 2016, and to-date has raised half of the capital needed to build the community and sustain it's endowment. Currently, we have 3 homes on property and construction has begun to run water and sewer, and paving of roads. How this benefits the community:As a community we are serving our dear neighbor by coming together to help one another and contributing to building a strong and safe community. Financially speaking, one homeless individual's estimated costs for medical, judicial, and support agencies per month are $30,000-$40,000 to the community in which they reside. What this money will be used for:Final expenses to the community center, memorial gardens, homes, and support serves needed to complete Eden Village. We cannot move anyone in, until all services are up and running.Tour an Eden Village tiny home :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzoOu81AOB8Eden Village in the news:https://youtu.be/JnexI9M9uG0https://www.gofundme.com/edenvillage
