Egypt Solid Waste Management Center of Excellence (ESWMCE) is a leading environmental center of excellence in the country founded at Ain Shams University in 2018 through a research project funded by the Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF). ESWMCE is the only center in Egypt that specializes in the field of environmental engineering in general and solid waste management in particular. The center has its own administrative and financial legislation as an applied research center. ESWMCE's main objectives are to:• Conduct research & development on utilization and management of different solid waste streams to minimize production rates, optimize waste utilization and maximize the generation of renewable energy from various types of solid waste.• Plan and develop solid waste management strategies to conserve natural resources and minimize the impact on land, water, air and climate.• Create a foundation of basic and applied knowledge on different aspects of solid waste utilization and management along with the development in human resources and technology.ESWMCE is the International Waste Working Group (IWWG) branch for the Middle East and Northern Africa Region (IWWG-MENARB). The main goal of IWWG-MENARB is to train and provide reliable information to those interested in solid waste management in the region, through promoting best practices in waste management and building capacities of local authorities. ESWMCE scope of work includes three main areas which are applied scientific research, education and training, and outreach to industry. The center promotes innovation through mobilizing available resources to develop solid waste management technologies.
