Electrostaticspraying of coating and other liquids has beenaround since 1940.How it WorksThe basic theory of electrostatic spraying is toapply a positive charge to the paint or liquid beingapplied and to ground or negatively charge thesurface being coated. Using the basic principle thatopposite charges attract, the liquid would then beattracted to the surface, allowing for a full, evencoat of liquid on the surface.This concept is combined with the process ofatomization. By applying an electrostatic charge tothe liquid, each particle becomes charged with thesame positive charge. Again using the basicprinciple that opposites attract and similar chargesrepel, the particles are naturally repelled by oneanother, and freely break apart or atomize. This isthe primary concept that allows for a more evencoating.Advantages of Electrostatic SprayingElectrostatic spraying has numerous advantagesover conventional sprayers and other coatingmethods.Most prominently, the electrostatic charge appliedgives a more even, full coat compared othermethods. When the positively charged paint issprayed onto a negatively charged (grounded)surface, the paint particles are naturally andstrongly attracted to the surface. Since the entiresurface is negatively charged, the entire surface willbe covered by the paint, leading to uniformcoverage.
