Emerald City Kickball began in Spring 2020 as a project between friends to find a safe and affirming way to create an inclusive community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each came with diverse experiences and networks which ultimately fed the league's goal to connect different corners of the community together. As a recreational sport that is accessible to players regardless of skill, experience, or financial level, kickball quickly became a vibrant piece of the Sydney LGBTQIA+ community. After only three months, Emerald City Kickball was honored by a Google Grant helping us join other amazing community organisation in the 2021 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Being on the LGBTQIA+ communities biggest stages allowed us to spread our wings and showcase the joy of kickball. This moment was huge for Emerald City Kickball as we demonstrated that even in a time of isolation like COVID, togetherness can still be found. Our biggest honor came during the Mardi Gras Awards Ceremony. We were the newest organisation and received recognitions for "Ron Austin Award for Most Fabulous Parade Entry" and "Best Individual or Small Community Group". Much like the bin chickens that inspired our costumes, Emerald City Kickball was on track from strange, new transplant to eventual local icon. Heading into the future, Emerald City Kickball aspires to grow and empower our community to be a beacon for those seeking an inclusive, fun safe space
